The UNLOCKED performance was the culmination of a residency at Glenside Hospital Museum, a year spent absorbing the atmosphere and the implications of the collection. Each of the artists researched the archives, delved into the narratives behind the museum’s assortment of eclectic objects and listened to people’s stories about working in the hospital or of being a patient there. This resulted in two exhibitions. To connect the different strands of the work and develop it further, we invited theatre director Lily McLeish to make a new collaborative project using the writing from the artworks as the basis for devising a site-responsive theatre installation in the museum itself, blurring the edge between visual arts and theatre.
